Each month we honor mentors who go above and beyond. This month we are excited to announce that Dan Mills (Whittier Elementary) and Rachel Rockafellow (Longfellow Elementary), are our April Mentors in the Spotlight!  Congratulations, Dan and Rachel!

CAP Mentor:

Dan Mills (Whittier Elementary)

Dan embodies the characteristics that we look for in a CAP Mentor.  He is consistent, reliable, dedicated, and nurturing. He engages his mentee in learning and encourages him to believe in himself. What is more, Dan is funny! His dry sense of humor makes his mentee giggle and smile! Recently, Dan’s mentee asked him if he would be able to be his CAP Mentor in middle school. Dan said yes. The student then asked Dan if he was going to be able to be his mentor in high school. Dan said yes. The student then exclaimed, with a huge smile on his face, “What about in college? Can you have mentors in college?!”  This is a testament to how important and meaningful Dan is in his student’s life.  In the mentee’s own words: “I wish he could be my mentor for the next 40 years!”

CAP Mentor:

Rachel Rockafellow (Longfellow Elementary)

Rachel has been a CAP mentor at Longfellow since 2022. She is an avid biker and rides her bike to her CAP meetings most of the time ! Rachel is a dedicated, thoughtful, and endlessly creative mentor, bringing supplies for all sorts of projects from finger knitting to helping her mentee make gifts for friends and family. Sometimes the projects are challenging and they work on building frustration tolerance for hard things! Rachel is always flexible and willing to head out to recess, engage with her mentee’s friends in Uno, or play keep the balloon off the ground. Her student loves spending time with Rachel and knows that she is steady support no matter what they are doing. They are a sweet match! We are so lucky to have Rachel as a CAP mentor at Longfellow!
